Our Impact

At Headwaters, students build confidence as scientists and learn that no problem is too big for them to solve. Our mission is simple: to foster curiosity through science. Through hands-on, student-driven research, we help create informed citizens who engage with the world in more thoughtful and empathetic ways.

In practice, that means empowering students to take their learning into their own hands. In our programs, students are active participants in the scientific process, every step of the way. We teach them to build questions based on observations, form hypotheses, collect data (often at outdoor field sites), and finally interpret and share their findings. Through this process, we help students see that science is so much more than simply memorizing facts from a textbook — it’s a way of seeing the world. This shift is even backed by data: our survey results show that 96% of students reported being more curious to learn new things after participating in our programs.

We call this process Student Driven Research, but really it comes down to this: handing kids the compass and letting them find out what they’re capable of.
