Headwaters Science Institute is hiring a Program Manager 

Job Overview:

Headwaters Science Institute is looking for a full time program manager, teacher and camp director. Headwaters Science Institute is a 501(c)3 nonprofit formed with the mission of fostering curiosity through science. We engage students’ natural curiosity, guiding them to design and perform experiments that answer their own questions through the scientific method. We work with students and teachers grades 6-12 and do camps for kids ages 5-13. This job requires good organizational, teaching, and verbal communication skills. The program manager will be required to work with both the students and the classroom teachers as well as help the program director with program equipment organization and preparing program materials. 

The program manager is in charge of teaching and helping to develop and expand the Headwaters Science Institute’s school and camp programs. They will do some teaching in our research programs as well. This person will work with the program director to teach, schedule, and staff the school programs. This person is responsible for planning, teaching, developing, and scheduling all summer camps in the greater Truckee/Tahoe area. The program manager will work with the communications person and program director to help market the programs. In support of this effort, the program manager is responsible for the collection and dissemination of all necessary materials for highlighting the programs. As a staff member, they represent and promote Headwaters Science Institute to all potential and current stakeholders including: schools/teachers, donors, program parents, and the public in Northern California and Nevada and beyond to increase the reach of programs and perpetuate HSI’s growth. We are especially interested in increasing diversity in program participants with more underserved students. 

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications/experience:

  • MS in an area of scientific research or a comparable combination of education and experience as an administrator and previous supervision experience
  • Experience teaching science classes and/or working with students 
  • Statistics and graphing knowledge
  • Previous experience with marketing, fundraising, and working with non-profit organizations preferred
  • A strong desire to make a difference and to improve science education
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to work independently with self-discipline and self-motivation
  • Adaptability with changing task prioritization
  • Possess travel and work schedule flexibility; must be able and willing to have a flexible schedule that may include nights and weekends to attend programs, outreach functions/events, as required

Essential Job Function: Program Development and Implementation 

  • Help organize and teach at school programs and research program (curriculum development, scheduling, program materials, communication with staff, student parents, and teachers, helping reserve overnight accommodations for in-person programs)
  • Program implementation including high-quality instruction and planning
  • Communicate and coordinate with teachers for programs
  • Work with communications and program director for marketing plans and participate in marketing media (e.g. videos, blog posts, etc.) and outreach events
  • Introduce Headwaters programming to teachers, students, and parents
  • Help plan and staff Headwaters outreach booths and events
  • Help improve programs, curriculum, and materials
  • Work with program director to conduct program exit surveys, rubrics, and other program metrics: collecting data, running analyses, and presenting/summarizing the findings for each program and vertically across seasons
  • Fundraising: help with sponsorships, and finding and retaining donors, potential to help with grants. This may include new collaborative relationships
  • Work with the program director, communications, and executive director to find new school programs and market the programs to schools/teachers
  • Other duties as assigned

Reports To: Program Director
Status: Full time position
Pay range: $22-$25 per hour, potential to move to a salaried position within one year
Location: Northern, CA/ Reno, NV (some work from home, travel to schools, camps, and working with students)

    Approximately when would this position begin? I am currently working on my PhD and will be done with research, though not the dissertation, in May.

      We aim to hire shortly after the application period closes and begin training immediately. A completed PhD is not required to apply for the position, but the candidate must have full time work availability in order to be considered for the job.
