Headwaters Science Institute is hiring a Director of Programs

Job Overview:

The Director of programs is in charge of running, developing, and expanding Headwaters Science Institute’s school, camp, digital, and research programs. This person will supervise the program manager and program assistant. This includes overseeing clear communication, training, and goal orientation for program staff, and program mentors. In addition, the director of programs is responsible for primary communication with program students and their parents. The director of programs will work with the communications director and program manager to strategically plan and market the programs. In support of this effort, the director of programs is responsible for the collection and dissemination of all necessary materials for highlighting programs of all types to the marketing director for Headwaters communications. As an administrative level staff member, they represent and promote Headwaters Science Institute to all potential and current stakeholders including: schools/teachers, donors, program parents, and the public in Northern California and Nevada and beyond to increase the reach of programs and perpetuate HSI’s growth. We are especially interested in increasing diversity in program participants with more underserved students.

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications/experience:

  • MS or Ph.D. in an area of scientific research or a comparable combination of education and experience as an administrator and previous supervision experience
  • Experience teaching science classes and/or working with students (preferably at the high school level)
  • Statistics and graphing knowledge, previous experience with statistical software such as R preferred
  • Previous experience with marketing, fundraising, and working with non-profit organizations preferred
  • A strong desire to make a difference and to improve science education
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to work independently with self-discipline and self-motivation
  • Adaptability with changing task prioritization
  • Straight-forward communication about roles, expectations, and what needs to get done. Possess travel and work schedule flexibility; must be able and willing to have a flexible schedule that may include nights and weekends to attend marketing/outreach functions/events, as required

  • Willing to work variable hours week over week. Some weeks may require significantly more than 40 hours per week while other weeks may require less work

Reports To: Executive Director
Status: Full time position with salary
Pay range: $45,000-$55,000 depending on experience
Location: Northern, CA/ Reno, NV (work from home, travel to schools, and working with students will be necessary after COVID vaccine)

    Approximately when would this position begin? I am currently working on my PhD and will be done with research, though not the dissertation, in May.

      We aim to hire shortly after the application period closes and begin training immediately. A completed PhD is not required to apply for the position, but the candidate must have full time work availability in order to be considered for the job.
